So I was at the last Vision conference in Las Vegas where I kept getting mixed feedback on Workflow. I was told that if I wanted to use Workflow within the Symantec Management Suite it is free. However, if I want to use it with outside solutions I would have to pay for it. This was perfect because right now I would like to just use Workflow with DS 7.1 for scheduling and requesting computer\server builds. Yet I don't see how I can even get access to the designer tool to work on this. Was I mislead? I tried installing Workflow from SIM but the trial expired before I had a chance to even mess with it.

When you install the SMP Workflow Solution, there should be a page in the solution where you can download the Workflow (tool) installer. If I remember correctly, it's Manage - Workflows - Download Workflow Server and Designer.

Yes, the tool is largely free, we just "hide" advanced featured based on the license level of the SMP WF license (for 7.0 SP2). For 7.0 SP2, using a trial license may prevent you from getting access to some advanced component generators. Component generators should be a lot more open in 7.1.

More and more solutions are getting released with some "pre-built workflows". Maybe this is what they mean when you have to "pay for it"; maybe those pre-built solutions aren't available at a that solution's trial level. (unsure of this) But regardless of what level you get the Workflow solution, you get the doenload page for the tool, and it's free to install and play with.

Manage - Workflows - Manage Workflow Servers

In there is a link to Download Symantec Workflow Server and Designer.

    Thanks!

Some of the Process Manager parts are the things licensed (although if you're gettiing this on the homepage screen... something is awry...). I think you do have access to the Task List, however, that is open - and is meant to be used with the workflow aspect of the tool. again, in 7.1, lots more things should be free.

Ran through that installer but now when the ProcessManager page loads I get "You don't have license to view this page.". So it isn't free?

If I go here, https://localhost/ProcessManager, I get the license error. However, I can click on everything else at it seems to work fine. Odd?

This might need to go in a new thread but when I try and add the NS server in the Notification Server Credentials Manager, it keeps giving me a "Could not connect to Notification Server at SERVER NAME. Please double check the settings and try again."

The settings are correct though?? I am connecting to the NS7 server on the same box.

If Designer is on the NS itself, try using localhost as the servername.

I opened a case and found out that if you have designer open you can't configure these settings. If you do it corrupts them. To fix it Ihad to do the following:
    1. Close Designer
    2. Delete all NS config entries in Notification Server Credentials Manager
    3. Add new entry
    4. Restart Workflow service extensions from the tray icon

    All good now!

I can confirm the above... the NS Creds tool has to be closed for the creds to be saved. That way the new creds (or changes to existing creds) can be read from other services.
