  • 1.  Wrong License installed on Brightmail server. What can I do?

    Posted Jan 23, 2009 08:50 AM

I work for an IT services company. I've managed to screw up big time by mixing up slf files needed by two of our customers. I'll call them Customer A and Customer B

    Here's the scenario...

    Customer A uses Brightmail (6.05.24)

    Customer B uses Symantec Multi-tier Protection (11.02)

I've got the following license files for them...

For Customer A I downloaded x Brightmail AntiSpam licenses (Call this License A)

For Customer B I downloaded x+ Symantec Multi-tier licenses (Call this License B)

Here's the good bit... Though my boss doesn't agree...

I installed License B on Customer A's server!

Apparently even though Customer B doesn't use Brightmail License B does include Brightmail components.

Brightmail at Customer A had expired and is now working correctly with Customer B's License.

Not sure where to go from here...

I think what I probably need to do is uninstall License B from Customer A's server. In which case how would I go about doing that?

Though as customer B don't use Brightmail is there a chance I can install License B on Customer B's server and they'll end up with all the licenses they need (only used for AV really) in which case Customer A will be happy (Brightmail working) and Customer B will be happy (AV working)...  This might have legal considerations and possibly cause problems come renewal time.

    Any help much appreciated.

    Hello,

So you are probably better off if you made sure to have the correct license for the correct customer. When the license is about to expire, (and their contract for that matter) there are warning messages sent to the customer to notify them to update their licensing.

As far as contracts go, I couldn't really speak legal but I would assume it would be best to have all of this in order. A quick call to licensing will usually take care of this.

So to remove the license from the "Customer A" just follow the steps below. (I'm assuming this is a Windows server??)

    1. On the Brightmail server stop the "Brightmail Conduit" and "Brightmail Server" services.

    2. Go to the \Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\Licenses folder and remove the installed license.

    3. Go to the \Program Files\Symantec\SBAS\Scanner\etc folder and remove the "cert.pem"

    4. Go to the \Program Files\Symantec\SBAS\Scanner\bin folder and run the regwizard.exe and install the correct license.

    5. Start the "Brightmail Conduit" and "Brightmail Server" services and you should be good to go.

    Hope this helps!

    Tom

    Hi,

Firstly you need to remove the previous license file from the path C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\Licenses and after that install the new license key C:\Program Files\Symantec\SBAS\Scanner\Bin\regwizard.exe.

Thanks for these answers.  I'll mark the solution when this is done.
