XenServer Support?
Hi all,
Can anyone tell me what version of XenServer Backup Exec supports (and what version of Backup Exec offers that support)?
FYI, I have a customer who is looking to P2V a number of their servers to XenServer v5.0. They currently use Backup Exec to perform their server backups, so intend to leverage this software to perform their P2V migrations (either restore directly into a VM or export to VHD file then import using XenConvert 1.1 tool).
Can anyone offer feedback and/or recommendations as to the best P2V method using Symantec software?
FYI, the customer needs to:
- Point-in-time P2V source to target
- Perform server validation and UAT
- Perform a final data synch of source to target
- Cutover live VM to production
What is the best way to synch up the source - target data using Backup Exec? Can a full restore be performed initially to the VM, followed by server validation and UAT, then a final incremental backup of the source taken before restoring it on top of the target system?
Any advice and/or information greatly appreciated! Thanks!
Regards,
Paul

Backup Exec System Recovery (BESR) doesn't support direct coversions to XenServer. It can however perform conversions to VHD. The best method though would be to create a new blank virtual machine on the XenServer and restore the BESR image into it using the SRD and Restore Anyware.
When you do a restore you either select an incremental or a baseline image. If you select an incremental the software goes back and builds the restore using the baseline image the incremental is attached to and every other incremental in between the baseline and the one you selected. This combined image is then restored. You cannot restore just the incremental by itself.
