XP SP2 to SP3 upgrade with SEP RU5 installed
Created: 23 Jun 2010 | 7 comments
We are upgrading our XP workstations to XP3 so that we can continue to receive MS security updates past July 2010. During our initial testing, we are seeing the following behavior from random XP workstations:
1. Symantec Management Client fails to start after reboot
2. Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Error! c:\program files\symantec antivirus\smc.exe
I've looked through the support site for Endpoint Protection and haven't found anything conclusive? Has anyone else experienced these issues?

hi
does that start if you do a repair of sep from add/ remove programs?
Should be similar
The closest thing that I am aware of is that we are working to fix some compatibility issues with Symantic AV, for SP3 RTM. The problems you have had with installing Symantic AV sound like similar compatibility issues we are fixing for RTM.

I read your link regarding Symantec Antivirus. It does not sound similar to what we are experiencing. I am really hoping I don't have to conduct a repair for each XP3 upgrade. Is there a script to do this? We are talking a 150 plus computers.
Which is the version you are

AravindKM - We are using RU5

We are using RU5 at both the SEPM servers and clients.
All your clients?
Is this happening on all your clients?
Try updating to the latest C++ redistributable package(s) before the installation of SP3.
2005 and 2008 (I don't think at this point 2010 will change anything).
Jason - No, this is not

No, this is not consistent. The Management client service startup has happened on about 4 out of 11 upgrades so far (awfully high percentage this early into it). For the C++ issue, this computer belongs to a computer that administers visual studio, this could technically be a one off issue. However, I have seen this error on our Lenova laptops and had to uninstall a proprietary Lenova component to make it stop. As I said, I'm early on into the XP3 upgrade process and wanted to get some good feedback given the errors experienced thus far.
