Year-End Backup

Still running on Windows 98 and cannot get a backup to complete, it stops after asking do I want to to append? I can hear the tape run for about 30 seconds then it stops and does nothing.

...sounds like a failed/failing tape drive.

Download your tape manufacturer's diagnostics and check it out. Otherwise try a backup using the Windows backup tool (if Win98 supported tape!) and see if the backup goes through. If not, then it is a hardware issue.

Stop the BE services before doing anything with the diagnostic tool or Win98 backup utility...

Adding to what Craig mentioned, check if the Removable Storage Service is started. If so, stop and disable this service.

...the OP uses Win98, and unfortunately there are no services (only processes), hence no RSM service to stop and disable.
