Before you save energy power - report to measure the savings
Hi Everyone.
In Australia the Australian government has passed legislation that all government agencies/departments must make energy saving to assist in reducing green house emissions.
One of the ways in which this is archived is by changing computer power settings, like setting LCD monitors to just go to sleep after 1 minute. apposed to screen saver after 30mins, and then off after 60mins
The problem is that although there are many ways to quickly reduce the amount of power being consumed. We are unable to show this saving, which raises the question how do you know you have actually made a saving. Unless we can report on the before and after affects, business & management won't support any such changes.
What I'm looking for is a utility or reports which can collect data and report on
- Energy Savings in Standby
- Energy Savings for all types in minutes
- Energy Usage for all Collections
- Energy Usage - per Computers in Collection
- Power Events captured in Time Range
- Power Modeling Report
- Total Energy Usage by Collection in minutes
- Total Energy Usage for all Computers in minutes
I have found such a product (eiPower Saver Solution - http://www.entisp.com/pages/eiPowerSaver.php ) But it might cost more then we want to spend, especially as the AU dollar is now about half the US dollar
I've also tied to manipulate some of the Altiris data such as that form the 'AeX AC Machine Usage' table, but it doesn't really provide what I want.
So I thought I would put this post out there and see what I get back,
Cheers,
Mick.
Mick,

There is a free Altiris Energy Saver Toolkit you can get from www.altiris.com/download.aspx that lets you set the monitor off and standby/hibernate settings. If you have WinXP or newer on all machines, you can probably create a Software Delivery package that runs PowerCFG.exe to create and set power saving configuration. The eiPower software certainly seems to have all the pieces you need though based on a brief review of the site. Do they offer a trial version you could test out to see if it gathers the data and has the reports you want?
Funny that the government hasn't provided any suggested or recommended methods for achieving such power savings...just laid down a mandate that it must be done
Thanks,
Kyle

Hi Kyle thanks for your reply.. the Altiris energy saver toolkit is very basic, and I'm hesitant to even call it a toolkit..
it sounds grate when you read about it on their website, but in practice it gives you little more then you can already achieve from GRO settings.
I'm really hoping that there will be some sort of Intel V-Pro type solution out there, where will monitor the power consumption.
Cheers,
Mick.
We are strongly considering
We are strongly considering the EI Power solution. Going to take it for a spin with about 200 machines out of our 3600.
I would like to go to Vpro but DELL does not have a viable workstation integrated with Vpro yet so we are checking into the cost of doing the EI Power mode.
I will let you know how it turns out.
