Netbackup error: Data buffers out of sequence (status 174)

Created: 10 Décembre 2012 | 8 comments

I'm running Netbackup 7.5 and trying to backup a Linux host using the SAN transport, but I keep getting the error  "data buffers out of sequence" with a status code of 174.   Now from what I can see it might be that I have to put the tape drives into variable length mode, but I can't find out how to do this.   Does anyone have any ideas, if this is what needs to be done and if so how to do it.

Thanks David

What is your buffer settings on the media servers. Can you post the detailed activity monitor log and BPTM log.

Symantec technote on intermittment 174 Error codes during SAN backup

http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH147561

Extract from it

Workaround
Symantec Engineering (Etrack:1736627) have adjusted the NetBackup code from NetBackup 6.5.6 to include a new touch file ( /usr/openv/var/FTCLIENT_VALIDATE_VIA_CHECK_CONDITION ). This touch file needs to be created on the client(s) experiencing the STATUS 174 failures.  After the touch file is created (NetBackup FT client service requires a restart), additional Client Data Block (CDB) information is supplied which counteracts the problems when the additional TUR data is sent.  Unfortunately, there will be a slight reduction in performance as the CDBs are sent twice

Hi,

All I have is this, I'm not sure where to find the rest of the stuff you requested.   I'm new to Netbackup.

This primarily seems to with the allocation of FC pipes during SAN Transport.

Please use the following technote - http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH71062

If the problem still persists, please provide the BPTM log from the below location.

UNIX - /usr/openv/netbackup/logs/bptm/

Just a quick check ... has this ever worked or is it the first time you have tried?

Just ask as there are a lot of pre-requisites for FT such as using a specific HBA etc. so wanted to check if it had ever worked - if not are you sure all pre-requisites have been met for you client and media server?

Double check everything in th eguide in case you missied anything - and then provide the bptm logs and configurations as requested by the others

Thanks

Well it has worked a bit, but I have now placed the drives in variable length mode and it appears to

be going through, but time will tell.   We do have the correct and HBA etc, it is a new Media Server and was designed for this use.

If it fails again, I will post the logs.

I have exhausted all avenues with this, I’m still getting sequence errors, but it’s only happening from Linux systems, windows systems appear fine.   If anyone can help it would be great.
