Hi All

NetBackup Master Server 7.1 (Windows 2k8R2 ENT SP1)

Client (Windows XP SP2/SP3) Outlook 2k3/7/10

Requirement: Backup the attached PST

When tried backing up from NetBackup 7.1 binaries my backup used to skip the attached PSTs and completes backup job with exceptions

but when tried with legacy binaries (6.5) it allowed me to backup with attached PST and didn't leveraged Client side deduplication

I overheard that 6.5 and one of subsequent MP release has funtionality to backup attached PST with DeDuplication.

Any one had experienced this behaviour

Also can we get changes difference between these two version

Does XP SP2/SP3 have built-in VSS for open file management?

NBU 7.x no longer uses/supports VSP and uses VSS.

Create bpbkar and bpfis logs on client to see if snapshots are attempted, otherwise close Outlook when backups are running to ensure PST's are not open.

NBU Dedupe was introduced in NBU 7.0. NBU 6.5 had no client-side dedupe.

The difference will be all the new features included in 7.0, 7.0.1, 7.1, etc:

Hi

Thanx for revert marianne

If PST are not open they get backed up . I tried using PureDisk for this and it was surprising that it did worked...

Winxp Sp2/3 have VSS enabled.

This makes me wonder as PureDisk can backup the same data from same client but NBU 7.x can't previously i concluded it could be MS XP limitation which couldn't allows to handle the multiple accesses to PST Outlook and NetBackup together but then again how does it allows PureDisk for same?

You need bpfis and bpbkar logs on client to see why files are skipped.

It says

WIN32 33: The process cannot access the file because another process has locked a portion of the file.

As PSTs are attached to outlook hence it would be locked, but VSS should allow to backup those files.

Again - check bpfis for snapshot attempt, snapshot error, etc.

As I've said before - also test while Outlook is closed.

hi mariaane

If outlook is closed backup works as PST are not locked by outlook processes.

Correct me if i am wrong,

Most of backup tools uses the passive mode of file to get the backup so when outlook is open then it is use .pst file every time and you can say that at the open time of .pst it is in the active state so possile that backup tool is skiping the same .pst file.

"If outlook is closed backup works"

So, your problem is not related to MSDP, but with open files.

Create bpfis on the client and look for errors/problems with snapshot.

There is the possibility that it is somesort of timeout issue but as Marianne says it does look VSS related so we need to see the bpfis logs although i would have expected there to have been an error in the clients event logs.

I have not tested this for your type of issue so cant say if it will help but when you are using client side de-dupe you could try making some edits:

On the client open the <install_path>\NetBackup\bin\ost-plugins\<storageservername>.cfg file

and change this value:
MaxRetryCount=5
to read:
MaxRetryCount=50

If still failing then add these lines to the client-side pd.conf file:
MATCH_PDRO = 0
LOCAL_SETTINGS = 1

You can also add COMPRESSION = 1 to help with client side de-dupe further

May be worth doing anyway?

Dear all

Thanx folks for sharing knowledge, but to no surprise NBU is still failing to backup .pst files where in PureDisk is winner on this head. The only limitation i found in compatibility list was XP_SP3 doesn't have support from NBU deduplication. help file contents says different story of native support from XP_SP2 onwards.
