SSR recovery of PGP encrypted disk

I am interested to know if anyone has successfully performed and image based restore taken with SSR, of a disk that is protected by PGP encryption.

I have been taking regular backups and tried to migrate over to an SSD which doesn't appear to have been successful as bootguard comes up and progresses no further.

If anyone has managed to complete this, would you mind sharing which options on restore were checked. In my case I went with:

  • Restore original disk signature
  • Make disk active for booting
  • Restore Master Boot Record

Hi Stuart,

To restore a computer with PGP Encryption, after you boot your computer using the Symantec Recovery Disk CD/DVD and restore your primary drive, you must rewrite the Master Boot Record (MBR).

DISCLAIMER: At this time, restoring volume(s) encrypted with PGP software is not currently supported by Symantec. The following steps are a 'work-around' in situations where a restore is imperative, and is not a guarantee of a successful restore.

You can do so by performing the following steps:

  1. Boot into the Symantec recovery environment using the Symantec Recovery Disk.
  2. Connect the backup media to your computer.
  3. Run the Recover My Computer wizard and restore your computer.
  4. Click the Analyze tab
  5. Click on Command Prompt.
  6. Browse to drive corresponding to the Symantec Recovery Disk CD or USB drive. Usually, for a CD its D: drive.
  7. Rewrite the Master Boot Record using the following command:
  • For Windows XP/2003:
    MANAGER\Bootsect.exe /nt52 C: /mbr
  • For Windows Vista or later:
    MANAGER\Bootsect.exe /nt60 C: /mbr
  1. Reboot the system.
  2. Start encryption of the restored volume.
