The VCS notifier supports SNMP and SMTP notifications.  In our organisation, SMTP is not regarded as a reliable transport and SNMP has inherent security issues that means we are strongly discouraged from using it.

My idea is to create a third notification option that allows the administrator to specify a script that is called from the Notifier to send the notification message.  Our organisation already has such a script that can securely fire messages to our enterprise console.

The notifier would check the return code from the script, and if non-zero would regard the message as not having been successfully sent, and keep retrying periodically until it is delivered.

We use VCS on AIX, Solaris and Linux so this would be something we would want on all those platforms.

Hi Leigh Brown,

In your organization, how does the enterprise console currently monitor the applications?  Does it scan log files as the VCS engine log has a great deal of information that could be useful.

I am interested in your idea, but would like to get more info on what you are looking for in this feature.
Currently, the notifier agent sends an SMTP or SNMP message based on how it is configured when an event occurs.
In your example, would you like the notifier agent to call a script when an event occurs?
is your notifiation script based on a commercial product you would like us to integrate with where it does not do so currently?

Thanks,
Anthony
