It can be done

We have been backing up the Xen VM's on an OCFS2 shared file system.  We target a single node of the Xen Cluster and just target the shared file system disk files. We have successfully performed DR restores after a storage failure using this method.

In order to perform a file level backup of the VM you still need to back it up like a standard server with the client installed..  We schedule the Host backup for one time period and the guest backups for a different window to attempt to keep things in check.

We have seen some occasional instability with OCFS2 and our backups.  The backup process can hang on the host and actually kill a gust VM - although the guest remains running.  The fix is an outage on the guest for a reboot.

XEN support

Backup from XEN hypervisor would be very usefull.  SuSe Linux Enterprise Server.

Kerry - Intersting techinque, I guess the occasional crashes are caused by the copy operation on the disk image.  Would be good if this was officaly supported through the GUI
