Greetings=

It will be very good to have an option to chose between different hypervisor platforms. There are companies that have different hypervisors than VMWare.
My idea is to add support for Citrix XenServer and Microsoft Hyper-V.

In terms of priority, what are the most important hypervisors to support after VMware?  Would you rank Xen or Hyper-V as more important?  How does the choice of hypervisor map to customer demographics, such as company size, industry, or geographic location?

I would prefer Hyper-V as the second choice after VMware.
Here in Germany our customers are most often running Windows servers and now discover Hyper-V as a built in technology.
Xen is a topic but it i hear them talking about and not using it.

XenServer would be the better platform with wide linux support compared to Hyper-V

I suppose that the Hyper-V market share will grow in companies that has corporate contracts with microsoft or people are microsoft fans, XenServer is prety new in his 5.5 version which is free alternative of VMWare,it (maybe) will become a player in next years at Hypervisors market. I guess this will be situating in Bulgarian and East European market.
I would like to see version of Brightmail Gateway for Hyper-V in next 6 – 12 Months and XenServer in next 12 – 24 Months

I really would love to see that Symantec add support for Hyper-V. We sell almost only SBS 2008 and there is the Hyper-V already included.

So, not only you are not willing to include support for anything else than VMWhatever, but you are making everything to prevent it from running on alternative platform, right ? In versions prior 9 there was no IDE support and this was essential if you decide to run it inside XenServer. Well, you forgot to remove a testing kernel which had IDE in it. This made it possible to run it (yet somehow crippled) on XenServer platform. Now with 9 you decided to drop support for Realtek ethernet device (not mentioned anywhere in the documentation that it is not supported)....... very clever symantec..... Some customers (AND Partners) will rather move on to another platform, but will not let you decide if they will use or not vmware.... think of it (forefront someone? )

So in brief guys, Symantec will never EVER have support for anything else but VMWARE..... prove me wrong :)

hi - we have been running Hyper-V for almost 2 years and would really like to see Symantec support this - theres no way we're going to go to VMware just for Brightmail..

Symantec is actively investigating Hyper-V support. I'm not sure I uinderstand why Symantec needs to actively block installation on unsupported platforms, as referenced above - our support policy is to explicitly state what platforms are supported and ensure that the product works in those environments.

In order to add support for Hyper-V, we need to run on a version of Linux that Microsoft supports.  Microsoft to date has only had a very limited set of Linux environments that they are willing to support. We are planning an upgrade to our Linux distribution in an upcoming release which should allow us to more actively consider Hyper-V as a supported platform in a future release.

Much of the availability and SF product line seem to use SUSE as their Base.  PureDisk, FileStore, the new NBU appliances.

Why can't Symantec standardize on a platform as a company?  Shouldn't all the appliance based products use the same OS platform?  That would make the most sense..

There is an online portal, save yourself the long hold times. Create ticket online, then call in with ticket # in hand :-) http://mysupport.symantec.com "We backup data to restore, we don't backup data just to back it up."

Now we have version 9.5 and still no support for Hyper-V. Most customers of us use Hyper-V Cluster and not VMWare. So also they would increase the availability for their brightmail.

Is there an announcement or statement from Symantec if and when Hyper-V support is planed?

Thanks

has anyone tried converting it from VM to Hyper-V on the recently released Server 2012?

We simply do not have the drivers to work inside anything besides a VMWare product. It's not a matter of converting it or tricking the SMG into working in another product.

Any news on when SMG 10.5 released date? I have a number of customers with their Brightmail Appliance need to be upgraded due to unsupported firmware. And we are proposing hyper-V based mail gateways. It looks like we're moving them to Clearwift as this is the only reputable competitir product that supports Hyper-V in the market. Our customers can't wait.

A respone would be helpful.

Unfortunately no, we don't hear this request very often and we're now covering the vast majority of the virtual environment market.
