In SAV 10, we set an Exchange distribution list of VirusAlerts@ourcompany.com as the From: address. The process is that the person responding to an alert simply replies to the email, thus notifying everyone that it's being handled. No reply = no one doing anything.

SEP 11 forces the From: address as SYSTEM@<servername>.com so the replies no longer o to the DL but to the Internet. Now people have to remember to change the address back to the DL.

Thanks for listening,

Ray

I was complaining about

I was complaining about something similar in my blog.   A helpful commenter posted the following:

"Try setting a user name in Server Properties: Mail Server. This works for me for scheduled reports.
The Help text says: "If you want to configure administrator email notifications, you should use the format user@domain in this text box. If this text box is left blank, SYSTEM@computer name sends the notifications."

That actually worked for me.

Wow!

Thanks! I just set it and am anxiously awaiting my first virus to test it. We actually had a support case and was told it was not possible.

This is a very basic thing to have

This is a very basic thing to have. I could not understand why this feature is not available. It doesn't makes sense to have alrts from system@machinename.

Need simpler way to configure From: address in Notifications

Glad to see there are others who feel there should be some way to configure the From: email address in notifications.  I have a very large BCS customer who wants some of their notifications to automatically create a help desk ticket.  But when their automated help desk ticket generated email is sent to the help desk it is bounced back as a invalid address.  I'll try the suggestion of adding a User Name in the SEPM -> Admin -> Servers -> SEPM name -> Edit Properties -> Mail Server tab -> User Name: field and hopefully that will resolve their issue.  Still believe there should be an option in the creation of Notifications, down in the "What should happen when this notification is triggered?" section to be able to change the From: email address.

Update to previous post, "Need simpler way to configure From:.."

Yes, changing the User Name: field  in SEPM -> Admin -> Servers -> SEPM name -> Edit Properties -> Mail Server tab allowed my customer to have email notifications sent to their Help Desk, which in turn allowed them to generate Help Desk tickets automatically.  My only concern now is if an Administrator wanted to have different notifications sent to a different group.  To resolve this there should be an option in the creation of Notifications, down in the "What should happen when this notification is triggered?" section to be able to change the From: email address.  This would allow the separate configuration of each email notification, if desired.  If not desired or left blank, then the notification would go to the user name listed in the Mail Server tab of SEPM.
