Allow Macintosh SEP Client to LiveUpdate via the SEPM
Created: 23 Jun 2010 | 6 comments
It would be awesome if the Macintosh SEP clients were able to download their updates via the SEPM like PCs can. We only have around 400 Macs, which is only about 10% of our PC clients. I hate that I have to build a dedicated LU Server just for those couple hundered clients. Just one more thing to administer. I built a VM to be my LUA for our MAC clients, so it's not a huge inconvenience, but updating via the SEPM would be ideal, since we're already managing this.

I agree with this 100%. Poor management policy to have some machines fall outside of managing simply because they run a different operating system. It is a security risk for some companies having to build special firewall rules so Mac PC's can get to the LU site and retrieve the content.
It's pretty clear that Mac support has been "grudeingly" added to SEP. If you're going to support a platform, though, at least make most of the features available. As it is, SEP for Mac is essentially SAV for Mac.
Why client content for the Mac via the SEPM server was not implimented with the client release is just poor planning.
Agreed, SEP for Mac is pretty much SAV for Mac with the capability to communicate with the SEPM. I am not a programmer nor am I on the development team, but my best guess as to why Mac clients can only update via running LiveUpdate, based on what I know about SAV/SEP for Mac under the hood, is because Macs use Java LiveUpdate. The content delivery process on Windows via the heartbeat process relies on LiveUpdate. My feelings are that waiting to completely re-engineer LiveUpdate on Mac would have taken too long to deliver a SEPM-managed Mac client--which has been in demand as long as I've been supporting SEP in general and SAV for Mac.
Any firewall rule that takes care of allowing the SEPM to get updates via LiveUpdate should also allow the Macs to update.

I agree with this as this will resolve most liveupdate problems and customer frustration.

This isn't the right forum for PGP/encryption, if that is what you're asking about. You may want to start a new thread in the forum specific to your issue--this is the Ideas section for Endpoint Security.
