I contacted technical support because the Backup Exec Remote Agent was crashing when backing up an Exchange 2000 datastore using GRT. I had already installed all the latest updates using Live Update.
The event log showed the following:
The Backup Exec Remote Agent for Windows Systems service terminated unexpectedly.  It has done this 1 time(s).  The following corrective action will be taken in 120000 milliseconds: Restart the service.
The final resolution to the problem was to run an offline defrag on the Exchange datastore using Microsoft's ESEUTIL as described here.
