BackupExec - Notify on Missed Backup

BackupExec  already has a complete alerting system - email, pager, etc, and sends numerous alerts and reports automatically - however it doesn't send any alerts when a backup is missed.  This would be really useful to have as we get alerts for failed backups so why not for missed backups - e.g. no media available.  In our environment a missed backup is a failed backup.

Absolutely!

A missed job is worse than a failed job.

With a failed job, I have a little bit of data.  With a missed job, I have nothing.

I totally agree that missed jobs are an event that should be taken more seriously by Backup Exec- alerts should be an option.

Mark this post as the solution, and have good luck for 7 years.
Forget to mark this as the solution, and tomorrow your server will crash.

Notify on Hung Backups

Also - Backup Exec should be able to notify if a backup takes to long to complete - i.e. we have a backup that takes about 20 hours to run.  If for some reason it hasn't completed within 30 hours then Backup Exec should notify us - in the recent case it was because the job was hanging during snapshot processing.

Missed Backup Alert

This would indeed be most helpful!

I can't believe they didn't think to include it already?!?

 Absolutely critical

Absolutely critical. An 'overdue' type alert would be extremely helpful too. Having 2 backups get missed because another one got stuck and not getting a single alert about it is NOT ideal in an environment where you don't have the time to nurse along what should be a completely automated process...

We need a patch to 12.5.  The organization I work for just won't allow trial versions to run on our enterprise systems..

Hi there, i agree with ebabin, there is a great need for a patch to 12.5, we cant afford downtime / problems with testing new software on live systems, customers would not allow it.

Backup Exec 2010 is now released! :-)

This Idea has been implemented in BE 2010 and is now available for download from www.backupexec.com

Please try the new version and let us know what you think about the Missed Job Alert functionality implementation.

Please Post the Directions

I have been tasked with setting this up but cannot locate the "Missed Job Notification". Can someone please post the directions?  I am running the 2010 version, but cannot find how to set this up.

Backup Exec 2010

Peter,

Please advise when a patch for 12.5 will be available to remedy this issue.

We are not prepared to perform a full upgrade just to fix a small bit of functionality that should have been working in the first place.

setting up the alert

it looks like a missing job shows up as a "job warning" and there is an alert category for that.  Hey Symantec, how about some documentation?

it looks more like a failed job than a warning - I have set up an alert for job warning so will test.

I would never had realised that missed job was job warning if it wasnt posted here by ford_prefect

Symantec why cant you add it in with a name like missed job so we all know what it is!

Backup Time

I see the Job warning for Missed Jobs, but was anything added to monitor job length/time? As other posts there are several instances that a Server backup has taken way too much time because of an agent or server issues and caused other jobs to be missed. While the Job warning about missed jobs helps, it'd be nicer to know somethings wrong before it caused other things to start going wrong.
