My understanding is that even 8.0.2 of Brightmail doesn't fully store all data in the MySQL db which is why reporting is so dismally slow.  In 4.1.x I could pull a report of every single sent message in a day, even if it was a couple thousand, in a few seconds, while 8.0.2 can take minutes on much more powerful hardware.  If properly used, reporting out of MySQL should be MUCH faster than sorting through the non-indexed text files of 4.1, but in reality 5.x, 7.x, and 8.x (there was no 6 for some reason) are all many times slower than 4.1 even on multi CPU, multi-GB systems (we have a 4.1 box that we still use for outbound mail on a 500Mhz Celeron with 512MB RAM and it's 10x faster for reprorting than 8 is.
