Scan computers on the network and, based on policies, automatically assign them an appropriate vlan or quarantine them and supply appropriate remedaition tools. Provide the ablility to pre-populate a database with devices such as printers by MAC address and automatically move them to a 'printing' vlan.

There are a couple solutions

Being an Altiris Platinum Partner we have worked with one of our other Platinum Partners called Chorus Systems (www.chorussystems.com) to integrate their software (via the Altiris SDK) into the Altiris framework. It does do Problem Management and Remediation based on Analyitics to notfiy and or remdiate both known and unknown problems.

You could tie that into Quarantine Solution and do some pretty incredible things. It also meets a number of requirements for ITIL around problem management. With the combination of Quaratine Solution (new version in beta) and with the possible release of Endpoint Security Solution some policies can definately be enforced.

For your Printer Scenario I have another idea on that one entirely. For years (even when working for Altiris) I thought integrating HP JetAdmin Software into Altiris to better manage printers would have been a nice solution. I plan to post that idea as well. With the relationship between Altiris and HP that would be a nice advantage for HP to have for its customers running Altiris as well.
