An idea would be to allow netbackup to automatically detect when a tape drive has been replaced and then automatically update its database with the new serial number info, instaed of this having to be manually done everytime a drive is replaced in the environment,

The requested functionality was added in NBU 6.0.

If drive is taken down, and then replaced, ltid will discover and automatically configure the replacement. Also, when ltid is started on a reboot, it will check for swapped tape drives and automatically configure a replacement.

This eliminates the need to reconfigure swapped tape drives either manually or using the Auto-configuration Wizard. This is supported on all major OS platforms.

In an environment where tape drives used as replacements are often prevously repaired drives.  Often times the drives were repaired for one problem but another now existed.  I have had technicians put in four tape drives before they had one that passed verification testing.  Automatically detecting the tape drive when put online would have the chance to have multiple hosts listing the tape drive with different serial numbers depending on when they checked the drive information.
