Enhance NetBackup Vault to separate striped SQL database backups to different tapes when duplicating to tape.

I'll try to keep this as brief as possible as to what we did to get around this problem.  All these SQL restores were attempted trying to use the same SQL database every time, but from backups that were done on different dates.  All these SQL database backups were done using 3 stripes.

The original attempt was trying to restore the 3 images from 2 tapes.  The third stripe in the restore would eventually time out & abort waiting for the tape that was in use by one of the first 2 stripes.

Next we tried to restore from a backup that was done on a different date using 3 images that had not been vaulted to tape yet.  These 3 images were still on disk & the restore ran fine.

Next we tried to restore from a backup that was done on a different date using 3 images that were on 3 different tapes.  This restore ran fine.

Next we tried to restore from a backup that was done on a different date using 3 images that were only on 2 tapes.  We got the same result as the original restore.  I expected that, but had to try it to verify.  It timed out & aborted waiting for the tape that was in use by one of the first 2 stripes.

Next we duplicated one of the images that was sharing the same tape with one of the other stripes from the previous attempt to a different tape & then tried the restore again.  It worked just fine having the 3 images on 3 different tapes.

See Symantec Case # 412-516-081 or # 412-659-581

Thanks,
Tom

I was one of the engineer that was working with this issue and I believe this isn't just isolated incident to SQL database. This could actually happens to those people that has exchange or even oracle database.

For those people that are doing multiplestream of any kinds database backup to a DSSU and doing a duplication of these images to tapes from vault. If you happened to have lesser number of tape drives than streamed number, it's possible that duplication process might put more than one image to a single tape media.

If you are one of those people that expires the DSSU images, and only image you have is on the tape, before you can do the restore, you should verify that those images are on separate tapes and if you see more than one images on a tape, you have to duplicate that tape.

I would like Symantec to consider looking at this as a flaw and come up with some sort of option to force the duplication in the vault to put these images to separate tapes.

Thanks

James
