GRT restores directly from tape (without staging the full VMDK to disk first)

I backup my file server using VMDK backup with GRT. The file server is 1TB in size.
If I want to restore a couple of files (let's say, 10Mb of data) using GRT, then Backup Exec will
1 - restore the full 1TB to the media server HDD (this takes a long time, and also requires 1TB of free space on the media server only for GRT restore operations)
2 - read the files from the VMDK (by mounting it, I suppose) and restore them to the original server

It would be really great if step 1 could be skipped somehow. Yes, I know, this is probably technically very difficult to implement, but wouldn't it be a killer feature?

Hello

This is a longstanding request for all Backup Exec GRT-enabled backups (Exchange, AD, SharePoint, Hyper-V and VMware). Our NetBackup product offers this today for Hyper-V and VMware only, so it is definitely possible for us to do. However, it is a large effort to do it across all of our GRT-enabled Agents.

If we had to implement it in stages, what would your order of priority be?

#1=VMware?
#2=Exchange?
#3=Active Directory?
#4=Hyper-V?
#5=SharePoint?

Let us know what you think

Thanks,

Peter

Hello Peter,

Thanks for your feedback. I fully agree with your proposed priorities. The large majority of my restore operations are of files (users delete them by mistake), so my first priority would be VMware.

Hi Peter,

Any chance we will see this feature in BE anytime soon?

Gaston

What exactly is the point of GRT if you have to stage tape to disk?  I still have to wait for by far the longest operation of the whole process.  If I'm going to wait for the entire thing to transfer to disk...why wouldn't I just restore the whole thing, power it up, and pull off whatever files I need....GRT without the need for GRT?  How does GRT help me at all if I still have to wait for the entire tape backup to be staged to disk?

Exactly, it doesn't make sense to not have this option in BE if NB already has it.  Funny thing is I was even told by one of their engineers that he didn't think it needed to stage in BE, but I clearly see it do it and have screen shots.

Ugh...

Is there any development on this? We are running the same backup to disk - disk to tape process and need to be able to restore a single file from the tape without having to mount all the data from the tape back to the server as there is not the space to do so.

Am wondering if this is a case of needing to change the way in which backups are being run, whether it is possible but we don't know how to do it , or whether new software is required.

Scott.

Morning Scott,

I'm still right here with you waiting.  I just can't believe that this feature is available with Net Backup but not Backup Exec.  They had the opportunity to add it in 2012 but have not seen that they did.

I'm sure the amount I pay for licensing is more than enough to include this feature.

Maybe soon!

Take care,

Eric

Well, I kinda gave up waiting for this... so disappointed when they did not add it in BE 2012, but added instead a lot of other "features" I don't need...

Eric, Gaston, Many thanks for your replies.

I guess the next question is has anyone moved away from BE to NB (or another alternative) and was there a procedure for migration? My concern would be if we moved away from BE, we would still potentially need to restore data backed up from the BE backups.

Regards
Scott.

Hello,

NBU don't have this feature for Exchange too :(

So restoring one email can be really long...
