"Hit Counter" Page for LiveUpdate Administrator 2.x
It would be a great benefit if administrators could see what their LUA 2.x server is actually being used for in their environment. How many times have client computers actually come to the Distribution Center to retrieve each of the sets of definitons that LUA has downloaded and made available?
LUA 2.x is often misconfigured (admins accidentally selecting entire product families, rather than just the languages and platfroms that are needed by the computers in their organization). A glance at a "hit counter" page would make it clear, for instance, that no clients in the network have ever needed (for instance) Itanium definitions, or definitions of a certain language or version. The admin could then save themselves a lot of bandwidth and disk space by adjusting their download and distribution configuration so that LUA is only stocking what its clients are coming to get.
As webservers can record the number of times a page is visited or a hosted file is downloaded, this should (theoretically) be an easy enough enhancement ot build into the product.
It would also be useful for admins to see what files clients have come looking for, but been unable to find. When client computers are configured to use an Internal LU server, it genearlly affects every Symantec product installed on that client. Have there been unintended consequences- say, a SMSMSE product which is no longer attempting to download its content from the Internet, but coming to look for it on a LUA server that hosts only SAV definitions? If admins could readily see an alert, "X unsuccessful requests for SMSMSE content were made against this LUA server," it would prompt them to add the necessary materials to the LUA's download and distribution schedules.
This information could be available eitehr as a page in the LUA GUI, or as a periodic email of alerts or statistics.
With such improvements in place, LUA would be delivering exactly what it is designed to do, with zero waste of resources, without overlooking any client.
Thanks and best regards,
Mick
