When we export a SEP client package from the SEPM console "Install Packages" view, the exported package contains old content, which means that once that package is installed, the new SEP client will need to retrieve new content from the SEPM or Liveupdate. We know there is a KB article that explains how to add the latest content to an exported package but we would like to see this happen automatically in the SEPM console when you export.

This is a great idea; I just

This is a great idea; I just have one tweak that I feel would be necessary.

It is important (for support personnel) to be able to have the option of using the certified definition set that came with the MR or MP so that we can rule out potential corruption or error in the definiton set used.

Another option that would be helpful would be the option to not include definitions at all, forcing the new client to immediately update via the SEPM.

At the very least having the option to export the package like this would be nice.

Good Option

It would a good idea to have the option to build a package with NO defs included or a specific revision of defs.

Great idea, one thought though

That seems like it would work as long as it was optional. Though it would be more convenient for many if the SEPM would automatically updated the install packages with new definitions, I can't help but wonder how this would effect the system performance each time new definitions were downloaded if the SEPM had to rebuild all the install packages. Hence I must agree with the above mentions of have the option to export the package with a set of definitions that the SEPM has available or none at all.

This would simply mean a

This would simply mean a separate file for the definitions to be included in the package and the first thing that SEP would do is check the folder it came with for that. :)

This will solve our problem

As soon as we install the clients with exported package it tries to download full updates form sepm and load the network.

hope next release will have this option so that we can get package with lates update every time we export the package.

Another argument for the idea.

Just saw the status as being reviewed. Just to get GrahamA's idea another plus. Consider the time a malware needs to copy itself across the network and do its thing and the time an antivirus (ANY antivirus) needs to download and install the latest definitions when a newly setup client is connected to the network for the first time.

BTW, I'm seeing more and more Symantec Employees in the forums lately. YEY!

This is a nice idea .In present condition we have to add latest package manually after exporting otherwise it will get installed with old updates and it has to download the updates .It will cause extra load in network also.

This is a must...

As we all know, the first updates have great size. I think this will solve the problem in great bandwidth utilization. Nice idea!

Hello Jim, I had a site setup

Hello Jim,

I had a site setup with MR4 MP2, and recently upgraded to RU5.

SEPMs have latest definitions, but freshly exported client package does not seems to use latest definition.  After installation is gave error or old definitions and the definition which got installed are dated 15-April-2009.   Please advise!

Sincere regards,

Sounds like you exported and

Sounds like you exported and installed an MR4MP2 package, which will always have definitions of 15-April-2009.

RU5 packages are the ones that get created with current definitions.

Clarification.

There are 2 types of RU5 packages that can be created by the SEPM;

1. Autoupgrade packages (Created by the SEPM when an older client requests an RU5 package)

2. Manually created packages (Exported by a SEPM admin from the admin tab.)

Autoupgrade packages are created without virus definitions and are much smaller as a result.

Manually created packages are still created with pre-built definitions that are built in to the SEPM for each RU.

Now that RU5 is available and autoupgrade clients do not get definitions sent from the SEPM you can follow the steps in the document below to put current definitions in an exported package:

How to deploy the Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP) client Release Update 5 or later with current virus definitions and intrusion prevention signatures.

I followed the article at

I followed the article at http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/ent-security.nsf/docid/2008042213451848

The issue is the output from step 9 under the heading To create a self extracting executable package does not work as expected. It creates a package that auto-extracts the SEP files, but doesn't start the install. Support have replicated this(case 281-877-663).

Additionally this only updates the Antivirus & Antispyware Protection defs. What about the Proactive Threat Protection or Network Threat Protection?  Are these components not important enough to get defs updates too? I raised this with support and its not possible to have these defs updated at install time.

Why can't a SEPM Admin create an install package that is up to date. It shouldn't be a complex issue, should it?

Hello Jeremy, It is

Hello Jeremy,

It is interesting when I exported a client package after upgrading to RU5, it had definition of 15-April-2009. and not 17-Sept.09 ( in your case).  My SEPMs are running on windows 2003 Stand, SP2 servers.   I had tested on three different type clients with three different packages - XP, Vista, and windows 2003 server.  I just wanted to let you know in case if it would be any help while discussing with development team.

Sincere regards,

 15-April-2009 is the default

15-April-2009 is the default date for MR4MP2 install package's definitions.

It is very easy to not adjust the drop down in an upgraded SEPM to get the current revision when exporting a package; Most likely your package is MR4MP2 and not RU5.
