I highly sugest Altiris integrate in the inventory the following information, seems not currently collected by default from Altiris CMS 6 or CMS 7 (and that is a shame)

  • Device enumeration string (PCI/VEN_8086&DEV_1234)
  • Device driver file, Version + name + editor name...

I was so despite to see not included in standard Altiris inventory 7 !

Oops I forgot to add also:

  • The Device Class (to classify those drivers; network, video,  etc...)

The DS Console provides basic hardware inventory, but lacks any real information. To maintain my systems and boot discs, I currently have a large excel spreadsheet of all the main hardware device and vendor IDs (and ACPI and VID IDs where required). It would be much easier if I could drill into a device in DS to get this information.

EDIT: My apologies, this suggestion was included in the "Altiris Deployment Solution" group as well... I completely missed the fact that the original request was for the Inventory solutions. My addition would be to incldue this information within the "Get Inventory" task of "Deployment Solution" so that it apepars under a computer's properties.

I agree we should be able to complete EXPRESS base also with the enumeration string of each device. But I guess Symantec will more invest in DS7 than DS 6.9, all the same a large number of customers does not want to see any SMP/NS web console.

All this data on device enumeration is captured by WMI.  Altriis Inventory solution can be extended through a custom inventory that gathers the additional WMI information you require for device enumeration.

Hi, for sure we can spend times to build a custom inventory to get those drivers files, version, enumeration string... But why should we invest times for building such, as this is a standard Windows inventory that most other vendors, freeware, open source inventory solutions, are able to collect ???

Sorry but I feel this is a "hole" that Symantec should complete as soon as possible, for CMS7, and for CMS6 also !
That's my point of view.

I'm ok with it : all is possible with custom inventory but it costs to developp and to maintain.

oops, we must not forgot to include in the information the Device Class information (disk, network, video, etc...), that is the "Class=*" in the INF file, and that is the logo display & group in the Windows Device manager.

We would like to get in the inventory the basic Windows drivers versions inventory, most common inventory solutions are able to provide:
- Device name
- Device enumeration string (PCI/VEN_8086&DEV_1234)
- Device driver file (sys file), Version + name + editor name...
- The Device Class (to classify those drivers; network, video,  etc...)

Thanks a lot for your help.
We also investigate using the 2 others products:
- DS 6.9 sp4: those information not provided/available
- CMS 7.0 sp2:  same
In all cases, we do not see any report with those informations.

I should open a new ticket to tell the Symantec support, most those information seems in fact available into CMS7.0 inventory.
I take care to create a Symantec support ticket to got confirmation nothing was available, before creating this Idea ! :-(
I wonder if any Symantec people are reading our "ideas", from Time to time...
Perhaps only those coming up 100 "Agree" ??
I don't remember the DataClass name, I will provide in there as soon as I can. Enjoy CMS7 ;-).
