License Key Simplification
I work at a site that had lots of legacy master servers. By legacy i mean OLD. We pay support on all of these servers and with that are able to recieve upgrades when available. The probelm many different people purchased the original keys so the upgrade notifications dont all come to me or my department. We have used the upgrade portal to muddle our way through and try to upgrade our old keys. But that is not always possible and surely not easy. There is an option to have a enterprise license sysytem but its only avaialble if your install is a little bigger than what i have. So i still have to deal with this key issue. Which means when I hit the powerball lottery, i suspect whoever fills my shoes will be in no better shape license wize than me. I like to leave things better then how i find them so that is painfull.
It makes sense to me if i pay a support license on 20 Master servers, and I dont have 20 6.5 keys, that someone should be able to give me what i need, but this is not the case.
anybody else out there in my boat?

Why is a new key needed? Are you trying to enable new features? Or is the pain around getting the serial number required to access FileStore?

Steve,
The problem is with the license portal. It's crap. Not very friendly, useable, nor intuive. FileConnect is only slightly better but only because it's used more often than the licensing portal.
Then you get into the way Symantec processes orders from partners and disty where an entity could be XYZ Corp, XYZCorp, or just XYZ. Then you get 3 different businesses and each will get a new support ID number, and then their licenses wont all be in the same view within the portal.
Off to licensing@symantec.com and someone in a foreign country to screw it up more and finally get it resolved about 3 weeks later correctly. It takes this long as there is always a 3-5 day lag when someone is responding to emails.
Why can't NBU (because that is what you are responsible for right?) have a unique generated key/hash that unlocked what a customer purchases, and not a single key for each and every option? loading in 10 keys suck. A single global key would be nice. Remeber the days of PureDisk 6.5 and older where the key had to be typed by hand? I all but pretty much stopped selling it because of that!
Key's suck, there has got to be a better way. Why not an activation based on an email address and unique key? SEP is doing that, take their technology!
There has to be a tigher integration between partners, disty, account reps, your ERP, and licensing portal... But I digress, that is more of a procedural thing than a technology/prodcut discussion.
There is an online portal, save yourself the long hold times. Create ticket online, then call in with ticket # in hand :-) http://mysupport.symantec.com "We backup data to restore, we don't backup data just to back it up."
