Locking old threads

It would be nice to have old threads locked or set to read only automatically. That way users don't take a post that is two years old and try to answer it just to get points. It also stops users from being able to take a very old post and saying "I have this exact same issue". They usually don't have the "exact" same issue, and tagging on to an old post usually just adds to the confusion. Also it doesn't allow users to edit the oringial posts to add things such as log files or screen shots. The best thing people can do is to make new posts and provide a link to a thread they feel is relavent, and I think that by inforcing a lock on threads that are so many months old would be good for the community. Suggestions on the length of time the threads should be left open are welcome. Also I think it would be important for the thread owner to be able to unlock the post in case he/she wants to make a comment after the expiration period.

Cheers

I must agree with this idea

This is an excellent idea for the forums here. Most other forums have a feature like that where posts will be locked either when an issue is resolved and/or after a certain amount of time with no interactions.

What is an appropriate duration?

This is a good idea - what do you think would be an appropriate length of time to wait?  I would think that 12 or 18 months would be about right, but what does everyone else think?

Personally I think the length

Personally I think the length of time should be shorter than that. I think most other companies lock after ~6 months or so. But this should be 6 months with no activity, which is abviously different than locking after 6 months period. And I think it would be great to give Tech Support, Symantec Employees, Trusted Advisors, or the original poster the option to unlock the thread. This allows a little flexibility in the rule if there is a good reason to unlock it. But again I am not even sold on 6 months (maybe sooner). I guess I just don't see the reason why someone would need to post on a thread after 6 months unless they are the original owner. I hope other people comment on the length of time they feel is appropriate, but after some googling 6 months seems about the standard ;)
