In the SEPM console today, it is not possible to rename "My Company" on the clients page. We would like to rename this to our actual company name, by right-clicking and entering the new name.

Re: Need ability to rename "My Company" in SEPM console

I wholeheartedly agree!

Besides the unprofessional (AOL-ish) appearance of the term "My Company", it makes identifiying the UNC paths for exported packages difficult.

Agreed.

Also it would be helpful when you look on the client, Help and support > troubleshooting, that it would show the full path to group the computer belongs to.
If you have AD sync enabled, and have long OU names, the name gets cut off when lookin on the symantec client.

I agree

I agree to this...I got so many request to change this..and makes impossible for me to make everybody understand...why so and why not..
Customers sometimes don't want to listen the technical excuse.

But it is 10 times better than Global and Temporary.

Two hands up. I agree that we should be able to change it. I call "my company" is a dead root, I do not think most of the people can use if it is named like that and we could not change. Change it. The change we believe!

It is a good idea. There should be an option for renaming "My Company" if we right click on it.

Please don't forget to mark your thread solved with whatever answer helped you : ) Thanks & Regards Aravind

I don't understand why a simple change (I'm assuming) such as rename "my company" was not incorporated into RU5.

Hello,

I do would like to be able to change to my institution, so that it looks more professional specially SEP clients are installed on top/senior mangament computers.

I am assuming it may not fall on priority list of development team as basic function of protection is not affected.  But I hope they will get to it some time.

Sincerely thank you!

This has been a bone of contention since it went from Global to My Company.  I've never understood why it was changed in the first place.  In any case I agree with the idea of making this a variable field thus allowing the end use to pick the root name.

Agreed.

What's the problem? A Symantec Employee has posted elsewhere that this fix was in the works. Supposed to be out in the next release. So what's the excuse?

Has anyone heard if the option will be available in v12?

It would be good when the default group would be hardcode (for returning clients) and the rest of the groups should be possible to change by sep admin

You may not be, I did an 11.x --> 12.x upgrade, not a fresh install.

Has anyone modified the database to change this value?

default dirs as variable undeletable directories in SEPM

it would be nice to have this as a variable. My company and default dir would be undeleteable but renameable. So this possiblility for clients to return back would be still there.

Three years, and still not fixed

In 2009 the ability to change "My Company" was promised as a feature of "future version" of SEPM.
When in the future? In our lifetime?

Still not possible in 12.1

Please fix ASAP. I am bored of having to rename the folders of exported clients.

Possible explanation

I've worked with the product for quite some time now and I may have an answer as to why renaming "My Company" could cause issues. The reason you can't/shouldn't rename the "Default Group" is only slightly less confusing.

When, over the course of time, a group name changes, there are some subtle results. The communications file updates to reflect the new group name and the connected clients will download it and update their settings. Disconnected clients that are still in the SEPM database will resume communications in the new group. Disconnected or new clients that are not in the SEPM database request registration with the old group name and are then moved to "My Company\Default Group". All of that is just the minor stuff. One other obvious effect is that, without a major modification of existing data, all of the old report data would give you group names that don't match the current group structure.

Suppose you rename "My Company". Now, not even the Default Group is in the same place. New and deleted clients alike would have no place to go unless some core function now knows to place them in a new location. Add to that the possibility that a group name contains characters which may cause their own issues with communications and you may lose communication with the whole environment.

But behind every group name is a unique ID number (GUID) that takes care of major associations with clients, policies and groups in the SEPM. If the group name was replaced with the GUID in all transactions, perhaps the name could simply be a tag for the group. In this case, you could update the group name as often as you want and it would never affect communications. The next decision would be on how to handle the log data. Would it all contain the GUID and simply reflect the current group name or would you want to retain the old group name for the old records.

All of this is to say that, while it is a bit complicated, it should not be so difficult to make the necessary changes to make this feature possible. The only thing left is, for everyone who believes this is an essential feature, to vote on it. Just keep in mind that you may have other, more significant ideas that you would like to see put into the product, with a bit more emphasis on function than form. Keep the votes coming and perhaps we will see this feature sooner rather than later.

Yes, please.

Working through setting up a new SEPM 12.1, and yes, absolutely, I would like to change the default name at the top of the tree to a short company identifier rather than My Company.  'My Company' just does not sound professional.  Wasn't this the reason the installer asked for company name right between the questions for database user password and default SEPM admin user name?

Now if someone can kindly direct me to where I can voice my opinion of reports that will let you select data but do not support copying that data to the clipboard?

Well, It's been over 2 years

Well, It's been over 2 years since this "idea" was posted. Obviously Symantec is listening to our ideas, right?

Actually I think it was more than 2 years, since this post was a repost.

Good luck on seeing it actually implemented, maybe in version 19.1.12.4321, it's just around the corner.
