Very often it is not easy to find out proper log entries about outage, errors and other events in Netbackup environment.
There are too many logs, now located in three different areas: /usr/openv/netbackup/logs, /usr/openv/volmgr/debug and /usr/openv/logs plus bperror logs in /usr/openv/netbackup/db/errors .
The newest logs (/usr/openv/logs) require vxlogview command, which is not very friendly on big servers.
Many issues require checking multiple logs. It would be nice if we had a single command to check all logs for a specified event or specified time period. On the top of that the problem can be optionally analyzed. The analyzes recommendation would be based on real problem, not just an error code like in bperror command.
Also the log entries should have the same style. I like, for example, the old Netbackup style, where each line have severity status in angular brackets, ex, <2>, <8>,... It was easy to grep logs for particular status. But the severity status is not available in the new logs.

I agree with this posting

I agree with this posting regarding the current status ot Netbackup logging however I wanted to mention the following items below.

1. Another way to look at the vxlogs is to copy them to a Windows box that has at least the admin console installed. Then look at them via the graphical vx log viewer located in c:\program files\veritas\netbackup\bin\goodies

2. As far as I know the future direction of the Netbackup logs is that they will all eventually be under the newer Unified logging scheme.

Steve, thanks for the tip

Steve, thanks for the tip about the graphical vxlog viewer. Having a UNIX master, I dont readily dip into the subfolders of Windows, but now see there are some interesting/handy goodies.

Will endeavour to give it a whirl next time I have a problem.

Tip: Get overview/document your NBU environment. Run 'nbsu' and review the output.

YW

No problem. I am a Netbackup user as well so I always try and see it from the customers perspective when it comes to Netbackup useability. As a official note the items you may come across in those directories are not offically supported by support. In other words use at own risk

The unified  scheme is not a

The unified  scheme is not a unified logging. The logs are still different. They have different originator IDs and  they are coming from different files. That's  makes Netbackup troubleshooting  quite a hard job. The analyzer could make it much easier.

Thanks

There is a new utility for

There is a new utility for extracting and sending the logs to support:
http://support.veritas.com/docs/343774

Basic troubleshooting can be done with Problems Report or All Log Entries report in the console. More advanced log analysis will require a technical support case to be opened.
