In Backup Exec 12.5 ThreatCon functionality is built in. Backup Exec is trying to download a threatcon.zip file every 5 minutes, needed or not, Internet connected or not. Also you get a job warning every 24 hours mentioning the ThreatCon level is not up to date.

In a corporate environment this will flood firewall/proxy logfiles. The only workaround provided so far is to add an entry in the hosts file to point securityresponse.symantec.com to localhost.

If the backup server is able to download the threatcon.zip file there is also an unwanted side effect. The %userprofile%\Local Settings\Temp folder will fill up with numerous temp folders containing threatcon.zip files. Every 5 minutes a new temp folder is created. These folders will not be deleted so a regular manual cleanup is recommended.

IMHO the option to completely remove or disable this ThreatCon functionality is a must have!

I totally agree!

The ThreatCon messages are very annoying, and are flooding our alert queue for no good reason.  There are many of us that run networks not connected to the internet - and no, we're not going to.

BE v12.5 has lead me to conclude that I will never buy a product called "ThreatCon".

Mark this post as the solution, and have good luck for 7 years.
Forget to mark this as the solution, and tomorrow your server will crash.

Threatcon for Veritas Backup Reporter

We have the same issue with Veritas Backup Reporter, why would anyone want this utility to talk over the internet?
