Restore VCB full backups to any arbitrary location (BE local drive, etc...)

Backup Exec does not currently support restoring VCB full backups (VMDK + VMX files) to the Backup Exec server local drive (or to any arbitrary location on the network).

This can be useful for example in the below scenarios:
- All your ESX servers and hardware is gone (due to a fire, for example), and you want to restore your VMs directly into regular hardware and "play" them with VMWare player
- You want to send the VMDKs somewhere else

It is difficult to understand how such a basic feature is missing. After all, the full VCB backups are nothing more than big files on tape. You should be able to restore them anywhere you want.

I've just tried BE2010 and this feature has been added in the restore job options under "VMWare redirection". Great!

Hello

Keep the ideas coming. We liked this idea and implemented it in BE 2010.

Try it out and tell us if you liked it.

Thanks again and sorry it took so long to do.

Hello Peter,

I am just testing this new functionality and I just noticed that the VMDKs are restored and redirected as desired, but the VMX file is not restored!

Without the VMX file we can not "play" this VM with VMware player.

Best regards,

Gaston

Hello All,

"VMX file not restored" issue is solved in BE2010 R2.

Regards,

Gaston
