I just bought one of these U3 equipped USB Sticks. They are great. However not much software is U3 compliant. I was thinking, is it possible to rebuild SVS in a U3 compliant format?

If this is possible you have the world in your hands. Take your favorite apps wherever you want and run them on every machine.

I know already that VMplayer from VMWare is not able to be compiled for U3 as it needs specific hardware information.

I am curious what you think about this.

Cheers,
Marcel

Does SVS Need to be U3 compliant?

I have never worked on U3 drives but as far as I can collect data from net I feel SVS is already u3 compliant. As all the changes made by a layer is kept inside in the layer only. if you move the fslrdr folder to u3 I think still we can move it to other system as changes are in fsldr only.

Hang in there...

Yes, but with SVS 2.0, you have to do some manual hacks to get it to work. As mentioned elsewhere, 2.1 will natively support removable media. That is, "support" in that the needed technology will be present.

But specific platforms (such as U3) will only be officially supported via special releases done cooperatively with the platform vendor(s). So, basically, with SVS 2.1 you're invited to start experimenting. But removable media won't be officially supported by Altiris right away. (Won't be long tho...)

Multiple licenses?

This may not be on your side, Scott, but I'm thinking that the licensing issues could be a major factor. Does having it on a stick count as one installation? Or do you have to state how many computers you are going to use that stick on? Could get messy.

Vendor-Controlled

All portable app vendors have some sort of license enforcement technology built in. That's one of the value props that U3 brings to the table and why Altiris won't be pitching the regular SVS product as a supported solution.

SVS :: Network and Removeable Media Support

Support for layers on network storage and removable media is not in SVS 2.1 Beta 1.x.
