Starting with BackupExec v12.5, the server will attempt to poll the internet to get a Symantec ThreatCon status.  If there is no internet access, or there's a timeout, every day an alert will result saying "The Symantec ThreatCon Level is not up-to-date".

Many of us have servers that do not and will not have internet access, and we don't want or care about ThreatCon.  Every single day we get these nagging messages.  Please make it stop!

In general, no application should attempt to communicate over the internet without permission.  There needs to be an option to enable/disable this feature.

For information - issues

For information - issues surrounding this idea  are already under review by Backup Exec engineering.

Currently the alert message in the Backup Exec console is due to be addressed in Backup Exec 2010 so that it will only appear if jobs exist that are set to start if the threatcon changes. Thus only enabling the function if you enable something in a job that needs it.

Remaining under review is
1) the ability to configure proxy server security for this option
2) whether or not it can be addressed in the current version of Backup Exec.
