With laptop usage on the rise and IT departments facing the burden of protecting against loss & theft, Altiris should consider providing a Data or Disk encryption solution.

The products on the market today are mostly 'point solutions' and it's clear the market does not understand the need for integration with an overall Desktop Management system while leveraging the Config.Mgt. Database (CMDB)

As demonstrated in the Local Security Solution breakout session, accessing data on the workstation is as simple as booting from a CD and copying off e-mail or other sensitive documents. Encrypting the data and the local SAM are both crucial to endpoint security.

Altiris already has core techincal expertise in this area. Data encryption could be delivered in the same manner as SVS Layers (Encrypted Data Layer?), or to perform this function at a full-disk level, use of Recovery Solution and/or BootWorks MBR means of authorizing access pre-boot would be extreme interest.

I want an Altiris Data Encryption Solution too!

I have been looking at some of the current products out there, some of them are "Altiris Bootworks Aware". It would be nice to have local encryptions managed by Altiris. Add this to the Security Suite and Bang! It would be a home run.

It's coming...

I can confirm that we have something for encrypting data in the works. A timeframe for its release is not readily available but we hope to have more solid information available in early December.

Data encryption on portables

There is a package that can handle data encryption for laptops. It is called safeguard.

I use Altiris 6.1 deployment solution to use it.

The software encrypts the whole portable.

When you have a safeguard portable, you have to provide a username and a password when starting up the laptop. Then Windows will be started and you can reach the data on it.

After 5 attempts to break the encryption, the portable will be locked, and can only be unlocked by taking it into the office, and decrypting it with a package that is stored on the deployment server. This package is started by PXE boot.

I hope this will help you.

The company I work for is implementing this kind of solution for customers, mostly government offices.
