Status: On Roadmap

I think that Symantec should ensure that all their applications are available in Windows Installer format and come with a guide to customising the application using Wise Packaging Studio.
You could call such a program "Administrator Friendly" or something, and even extend it to include 3rd party apps (for a fee, of course!). Have some rules like:

  • Comes as Windows Installer.
  • Includes an Admin customisation guide.
  • No post install setup...
  • Disable registration... etc.

How about an MSI?

I'd be happy with Wise friendly packages - but I'd be even happier with standard MSI installs, and the ability to make MST files to customize installs.

After all, that's why MST (transform files) were invented....

Mark this post as the solution, and have good luck for 7 years.
Forget to mark this as the solution, and tomorrow your server will crash.

Similar for NetBackup

Trying to extract all the correct files to keep the install menu scripts working is a real chore!

Most Symantec apps are in Installshield, not Wise

Wise is a recent addition to the Symantec product list, and there is no internal requirement, as far as I can tell, to use Wise for creating MSIs  - I guess it's up to the developers to choose whatever tool they are familiar with.
However, it would be a massive leap forward for the industry if ALL software vendors actually provided MSIs that could be EASILY configured to achieve desired operation, using transforms as Microsoft intended....

If your issue has been solved, please use the "Mark as Solution" link on the most relevant thread.

Vendor MSI

Excellent idea EdT.
Setup Capture is the method that requires lot of attention and it is not always 100% reliable [i mean the results]. If we get vendor MSIs, it is much easy to repackage them.

I like the idea and an idea can change life :-)

The SEP guys need to go visit

The SEP guys need to go visit with the Backup Exec guys across the hall. They've included a simple MST generator for RAWS GPO installs for the last few versions of Backup Exec. No 3rd party products required.

When AD was released 10 years ago, I'd have thought all software would be easily installable by GPO by now!

Future Deliverable...

Hi,

The client packages of EV do use MSI today, but the server components use InstallShield.

Our intention is to move the server components to MSI over time, right now we do not have a release vehicle.

Regards,
