As part of readme/documentation that accompany hot fixes, service packs, etc, Symantec should include a list of what the latest agent versions should be once all agents are updated.

I have to put a ticket in for this info, and it seems like support doesn't have the info handy either right away.

Seems like users should be confirming if the upgrade was successful by checking agent versions, no?

The RU release notes do contain this information, so hopefully the different RN types will follow suit in time.

Also put version numbers to agent names. I put in this product improvement suggestion a couple of months ago. I had to have my tech rep give me agent versions to hot fix numers during my last roll up upgrade

Agent (Solution) versions are available at multiple locations –

  • SIM
  • First Time Portal
  • ECV – Under computer details
  • Resource Manager - Basic inventory
  • SMA right click - About SMA

Please clear bit more about 'I had to have my tech rep give me agent versions to hot fix numers during my last roll up upgrade'.

Thanks,

Vaibhav

Vaibhav,

I meant the last time I did an upgrade, I had to put a ticket in to see what the latest versions were as I couldn't find the info in the upgrade documentation on a KB online anywhere.  Tech support didn't seem to have the info easily available either, he had to upgrade a test environment to get the info.

A few months back I put a ticket in with support and we finally figured out that even though my upgrade agent policies were on, one of the agents hadn't updated properly from a prior upgrade, so it was slightly outdated.  I didn't know this because it wasn't documented anywhere what current versions were and when I saw some upgrading under software delivery, I wrongly assumed they all upgraded.  Now I make it a point to put a ticket in when I do an upgrade to get a list of current versions.

Regarding your suggestions -

- SIM isn't really accurate, at least as far as I can tell, unless something is wrong with my install.  In my SIM, as an example, I see Altiris Deployment Solution 7.5 - version 7.5.1597.  My clients are running Deployment Solution Plugin 7.5.1599 (HF2 installed).

- First Time Portal - don't know what this is (I assume splash screen I see post upgrade?), but if it's on the client it doesn't really help me if the client didn't upgrade properly

- ECV - don't know what this is, but again if it's on the client it doesn't really help me if the client didn't upgrade properly

- Resource Manager - Basic inventory - I think this only helps again if agents upgrade properly

- SMA right click - About SMA -  if it's on the client it doesn't really help me if the client didn't upgrade properly

I appreciate you trying to be helpful, but I don't see the harm in adding a screenshot or version numbers to documentation.

Thanks!

Yes, SIM will only tell you what product version is installed on the SMP as a solution.  It will not tell you the client version.

The FTP can be accessed from "SMP Console > Home > Notification Server Management > First Time Setup".

ECV = enhanced console view.  Basically the silverlight activity center.

Yes, the SMA Settings UI is after the fact, and relies on the new agent/plugin versions to be deployed first.

The release notes are the medium for this data, and we just need to ensure that this information is included.

Sorry for not being quite clear about FTP/ECV (thanks to SK).

I am completely agree with you that there should be info about versions in document too. I tried to help with with available info becasue I was not clear about the need.

Thanks!

Something that tells us what the version of plugins that the agent should be running at whatever level of patch/HF would be handy.

I put a ticket in since I still can't find this info publicly anywhere for HF3.  Sigh

The release notes for 7.5 HF 3 have the information you are looking for on page 10.  Either we missed it on first read, or it has since been added.
