Brightmail provides a backup option for a

  • Full Backup
  • Backup only Configuration and Incidents
  • Backup only Configuration, Incidents, Logs and Reports

The problem is that these options are good for restoring to the original location.  In the event of a disaster where Brightmail gateway must be restored to another site, the Brightmail backup is not useful because the server  IP addresses will be different.  I would like a disaster recovery backup option that backs up all the Policies (SPAM, Virus, Content) and configurations (protocols, Reputation, hosts) but not the server IP addresses.  This allows me to setup a DR site with the scanners and control center and restore the policies and configurations so I don't have to manually enter them.

This is one of the biggest issues I have with SBG.  Have you tried restoring a backup to a new box?
Also, try moving an existing CC to a new subnet.  I've never had any luck with that.

A releated suggestion

On the Backup tab, there is a backup now button that allows for a manual backup.

It would be nice if there were check-boxes infront of the existing scheduled backups, so you could run an existing configuration without entering the details by hand.  e.g. use this if a specific backup job failed for some reason, and you want to re-run it.
