I have been having trouble with Backup Exec backing up the vault store for by Enterprise Vault (Evault) deployment.  I found that the backup job completes successfully but it is not backing up the vault store files.  There are no errors or warnings, it simply does not back them up.  I have had an open case with some issues with Evault and the tech assigned to that case said I should open a separate case for this issue.  After opening the case and speaking to the technician, I was told Backup Exec only supports Evault up to version 10.0.2, as 10.0.4 (which I am running) isn't supported.  I was told to post a message to this forum as it is monitored and perhaps it will help Symantec look into supporting their own product.

Of course I tried recreating the backup job and went over every setting imaningable, but nothing resolved this issue.  I hope that this post will get to someone that can help make this happen.

Hi Lesa,

It's been 2 months, since you made the request for a Tech Support Engineer to join this thread. Any chance you could follow this up?

I too had an issue with using Backup Exec 2010 R3 SP2 and got credential failures, even though all credentials on SQL, EV etc that had worked on v9.

We got the same response about 10.0.4 not being supported.
Symantec say they have a focus on platform support and I'm sure you are trying, but it just makes it seem that the product has now become too unweildy and that problems with Backup Exec are just too hard. Windows 2012 R2. Exchange 2013 GRT etc not supported until Q3 2014, is laughable, but not surprising.

What is a complete shock is that Symantec do not support a sub-point upgrade for their own product.
A word of advice, next patch you release, either test that your own products back it up first or put a big warning on the download that goes somthing like this "We are aware that this patch might fix a whole range of issues with Enterprise Vault V10.0.1, but installing it will make any backups using Backup Exec 2010 or 2012 inoperable. We recommend that you try to rectify any issues that you have with other workarounds and do not install this patch if you are using Backup Exec to protect Enterprise Vault"

Is there a way to get an update on when Symantec will be releasing a new Enterprise Vault agent that will be able to backup version 10.0.4?  I an in the process of upgrading our Exchange environment to Exchange 2013.  According to the Symantec articles I have to be on Enterprise Vault 10.0.4 to support Exchange 2013.  It sure would be real nice if I was able to properly backup the Enterprive Vault 10.0.4 environment.

I opened a support case, 05864749, to see if I could get a date as to when it might be released.  All I was told was maybe in April 2014.  It sure would be nice to be able to backup a Symantec application with the Symantec Backup product.

I really cant understand why 10.0.4 was released if we cant back up the data.  I mean its not like Exchange 2013 CU3 (cough, Cough)..............

A quick follow up to my original post.  I was able to speak to someone on the Backupexec group at a higher tier support level and we were able to get it working.  In my case I didn't realize when the Backupexec agent is installed on both the EV and SQL servers, Backupexec lists the server as "Directory on SQLserverName."  Keep in mind that I am licensed for the Backupexec agent for Enterprise Vault, which is in addition to the standard agent.  Once I found that I was able to backup the vault directory with no trouble.  Also the person I spoke to said while Backupexec doesn't officially support EV 10.0.4, level one support should provide a "best effort" attempt to assist, which in my case did not happen.

Do you know what the solution was as I am working with Level 1 now and they are unable to determine the issue.  For me its simple I cannot browse the Vault Stores from the BEXEC selection list, I get an erorr.

Level one says thats the issue they are having with Bexec 2012/EV 10.0.4...  THis is very frustrating.

For me within the server list in Backupexec, I was looking at te entry that had the FQDN of my EV server and when I tried to browse through the vault store to choose what to backup, I couldn't select anything.  I found that I needed to look for a server named Directory on SQLServerName.  When I selected the backup job on this "server" and browse through the vault store, I was able to.

What error are you getting?

Based on your comments I checked the Backups I am running in my Testbed and, using BE 2012 and EV 10.0.4, I am able to backup both the Enterprist Vault stores and databases.  I am also backing up my Discovery Accelerator environment.  I am also able to setup a restore and brows to any and all items from these backups.  So, it looks like that even though it is not officially supported it seems to work for me.  The version of BE 2012 I am using is: 14.0 REV 1798 (64-bit).

Stil testing but Issue looks to be solved, there was still an entry in the BEXEC DB that was still pointing to the old EV Server.  ONce they manually removed those entries from the table i was able to back up once again.

I just have to test now to see if EV drops the stores into backup mode, and if in fact EV clears all the Alerts for not being backed up for almost 3+ Weeks.
