Can the Backup Exec RALUS Add-on for NETGEAR ReadyNAS be modified to work correctly with Backup Exec 2010 R3?

It was working error free with R2 but once I upgraded to R3 Backup Exec complains that the agent should be upgraded. The main reason we purchased the NETGEAR was its compatibilty with Backup Exec so hopefully the RALUS add-on will continue to be supported by Symantec.

Hello,

I think what you are experiencing is related to a new security feature introduced in Backup Exec 2010 R3.

What changed around this feature in R3 is that all communications between a BE Agent and the BE Server are now automatically encrypted to ensure there cannot be any "man in the middle" attacks in your environment where the Backup Exec server is mistakingly communicating with a fake Backup Exec Remote Agent in order to obtain system username and passwords that the Backup Exec Server contains in order to backup remote systems.

Backup Exec 2010 R3 introduces a new Private/Public Key Infrastructure security system that requires each Remote Agent to be "trusted" by the Backup Exec R3 Server via an encryption certificate that Backup Exec automatically creates when you install a Backup Exec R3 Remote Agent (Linux or Windows).

This is done automatically via "pushing" the R3 version of the Agent on Windows. For Linux, you just need to reinstall the R3 version of the Linux Agent on your Netgear NAS box. There is documentation in your R3 install that talks about this in detail.

You can check the certificates in the /opt/VRTSralus/data directory and the /etc/VRTSralus/ralus.cfg file to make sure the Agent is trusting the correct Backup Exec 2010 R3 server.

Let us know if you have any problems with it.
