We tried to restart the VSS writers service and reboot the media and remote server twice, ran live update and installed all the latest hotfixes but the backup job still failed.  The metadata writer was in a failing status whenever the backup jobs was initiated.  After assigning a fixed drive letter for the system reserve partition on the remote server I was able to run the backup job successfully
