In NetBackup, Windows NetBackup Servers can deploy Windows NetBackup Clients, and UNIX/Linux NetBackup Servers can deployment UNIX/Linux NetBackup Clients. However, you can't deploy UNIX/Linux NetBackup Clients from Windows NetBackup Servers, and visa versa.

Symantec should either integrate Altiris Technology (Symantec Endpoint Management) or document how to configure and use Altiris Technology, for cross-platform deployment and management of NetBackup Clients.

For years Our Windows admins have had this issue when installing there clients. Now that we are implementing a new infrastructure using Windows based servers me and the other Unix Administrators are running into problem and the Windows Admins get the easy install path.

We are a cross platform shop and this had been painful for our windows admins. Now that we are going to a Windows only infrastructure for NetBackup due to wanting to be able to back up esx boxes via vmware it has become painful for the UNIX admins to install the software. It would be nice if it didn't matter what platform you where on you could just have it configure and push the pre-configured client for the appropriate operating system to the system to back up.

Working with Backup Exec has provided us with the ability to deploy agents from a central location and moving to NetBackup has stopped us in out tracks as each agent needs to be installed manually.  Even with LiveUpdate giving us the ability to patch centrally and on mass, a cross platform deployment solution woudl definately eliviate the pain if like us, you have a mixed Linux/Windows environment.
