Here is my take on the Hot Backup issue.  Hot backups will work, as long as you follow the proper procedures for taking the backups and ensuring that your retention policy is set correctly for all files.  The restoration of a backup that was performed with a Hot backup is more complex that a Cold backup.  You need to have a real good understanding of database backup and restoration procedures to make sure that you don't lose any data.  If you did run into restore problems, you would need to contact the database support group (i.e. Oracle support), not all companies have a current support identifier for the database associated with the DLP product.  If you are one of the few companies to have customer support for the database that supports the DLP product and you backup up other database of the similer type with Hot backups, then there is no reason why you can't do the same for the DLP database.

From a support perspective, it is far easier to have everyone perform a Cold backup than a Hot backup.  You don't need to know the in and out of backups to restore your database from a Cold backup.  The documentation explains everything  you need to know in order to perform the backup/restore.  Usually the restore is overwritting  the existing files from files from tape.

hi brian

Thanx for limelight. i posted this because few of my customer are using DLP along with NetBackup or Backup (to protect their Oracle DB as well through HOT backup). But DLP team refuses to take direct Oracle Hot backup through either of this backup product. Indeed major of DLP data is within this oracle database but still there are other directoris which holds DLP information required to rebuild in case of disaster.... If we have native agent which would include this all by means of directives or any other sort. it would be great.

 Cheers !!!
