Documentation Enhancement for "Symantec NetBackup for NDMP 7.5 Administrator’s Guide"
Hello,
my name is Helmut Zeyen, I am working in the Technical Support Team for NetBackup in Germany.
Yesterday I made a bad experience in one of my case due to misunderstanding our documentation. Customer wanted to restore 2 single files from an NDMP-Backup, but had used "HIST=N" in the backup selection. Now he learned the 'hard way', that with this settings, single files can't be restored. Only a full volume restore is supported.
In the entire Administration Guide there is no hint for this.
In the Guide
"Symantec NetBackup for NDMP 7.5 Administrator’s Guide"
http://www.symantec.com/docs/DOC5164
we list on page 57 this:
---
Variables accumulate as the backup selections list is processed. For example, if
backup selections contains the following entries:
/vol/vol1
SET HIST = N
/vol/vol2
SET DEF = 20
SET SAMPLE = all
/vol/vol3
Directory/vol/vol1 is backed up without any user-specified environment variables.
The second directory (/vol/vol2) is backed up with the variable HIST set to N. The
third directory (/vol/vol3) is backed up with all three of the environment variables
set.
------------
Can this please modified to show a Warning Note there like this:
Variables accumulate as the backup selections list is processed. For example, if
backup selections contains the following entries:
/vol/vol1
SET HIST = N
/vol/vol2
SET DEF = 20
SET SAMPLE = all
/vol/vol3
Note: With "HIST=N" enabled, a single file restore cannot be done. Only full volume restores will be available.
Directory/vol/vol1 is backed up without any user-specified environment variables.
The second directory (/vol/vol2) is backed up with the variable HIST set to N. The
third directory (/vol/vol3) is backed up with all three of the environment variables
set.
Thanks in advance
