Enabling the usability of more than one cleaning tape
Created: 10 Oct 2012 | 3 comments
Until now all BEWS Versions uses only the first touched cleaning tape. Even it has reached his end of life (defined by reaching the maximum number of cleanings).
Other cleaning tapes remain unused. All BEWS triggered cleaning jobs use the same cleaning tape (420-055-794).
It is necessary that more than one cleaning tape can be addressed in bigger tape drive environments. Otherwise you have uncleaned tape drives, even if you have more than one cleaning slot.

If the number of cleanings for the cleaning tape has been exceeded, shouldn't it be removed from the library? This will re-claim the valuable slot and prevent it from being used again.
The end of life of a cleaning tape is the result of the last successful cleaning - normaly during the night or over the weekend.
And then you have nothing.
We have six tape drives in our library. Often the cleaning tape expires before all the drive cleanings are complete. Having it give one notification that the tape is expired and moving on to the second tape is a lot cleaner then seeing failed cleaning messages from the rest of the drives.
