Enterprise Vault Support for Safari, Firefox and iPhone / iPad devices
Dear Sirs,
I would like to address a need that several Enterprise Vault customers are asking for support:
- Non-IE browsers like Safari and Firefox --> Those browsers are used in non-windows OS like MAC OX or Linux and each year the % is higher.
Enterprise Vault needs to be supported on those browsers not only for seaching but for viewing archived content and also enabling support for OWA Extensions.
- Mobile OS devices like iPhone / iPad IOS and Android --> Mobility is something that is growing fast in the market. Support for those devices is critical.
Those devices are mostly used all over the world (estimate of 40-50 million in 2011). If we can access our emails connecting to Exchange servers / OWA, it makes sense to also have support for viewing and manage archived content from those devices.
Those two requests will be well received in the Email Archiving industry and I'm sure it will make a difference when customers have to choose their solution.
Either go with a solution which is only Microsoft oriented or go to a wider solution which supports Microsoft and other non-windows OSes as well as other known mobile devices.
Thank you.
Kind regards,
Nuno

I strongly agree with Nuno. Our users are constantly complaining about this and it affects our deployments of EV.
We are currently considering other solutions in the market. This lack of interoperability is a major limitation of the product in the deployment we are doing.
Hope this is fixed soon!
Hi Everyone, I do also agree based on Microsoft OWA supportability http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff728623.aspx
Besides Internet Explorer are also supported Firefox 3.0.1, Safari 3.1, Chrome and Opera and an increasing number of mobility users with Ipad's are using Safari.
Hopefully this will be resolved to answer one of the very few awkward questions relating to EV.
STS for EV for Exchange 7/7.5 & 8.0
Support for the Enterprise Vault OWA extensions on non-IE browsers is a roadmap item and something we are considering for a future release.
On the mobilility front then we have a partner who has developed a number of native applications to access archived items from Enterprise Vault from iPhone/iPad, Blackberry and Android devices. I can supply more information for those interested.
Hi Guys,
CommonDesk released an App that allows users to Access their EV accounts on their mobile phones.
Check this out : http://www.commondesk.com/products
I agree. There needs to be a tablet solution for EV.
Any updates as to when Enterprise Vault will support the IPhone? I have recently worked 2 separate engagements, the 2nd of which is at a major University, and they have a large community of IPhone users.
Have you looked at the Commondesk solution?
Many Thanks,
Rob

We have, Rob. Unfortunately, they are asking a pretty hefty price and the customer isn't interested in paying the fee........
You could/should approach product managers (again) then ... I think.
Many Thanks,

Alex,
Thanks for the information. It is very important that the user doesn't have to go through extra steps on their iOS or tablet device to access their vault. If they have to use a web browser, I believe there will be significant user push back since they will want to access the vault using the mail UI folder structure found on the iPhone and iPad. Can you elaborate? Thanks.
John
John - That is exactly the solution that I was outlining. The Mail Connect feature will give IMAP access to the users archive which means you'd be able to use the standard Mail app on iOS, for example, to connect to both the users mailbox (Exchange or otherwise) and their archive using IMAP.
They would then be able to browse into and view items in their archive in the same way that they can for items in their mailbox.
Does that clarify?
Excellent. Thanks for the clarification. Do you have a rough estimate as to when this will be available?
As I mentioned above we are looking to include this in our Dublin release but no timeframes are available right now. We are looking well into next year as an indication though.
Hi Alex,
Any news about the relase of Mail Connect feature?
Each day we have more and more customers asking for the integration of Enterprise Vault with other non-windows or non-IE devices.
This is a major limitation either for existing customers who will not buy more licenses or with new prospects who are waiting or seeing other solutions because of this interoperability issue.
Please check with your PM and SM that is missing feature / interoperability is causing damage in Enterprise Vault sales.
Thanks.
Kind regards,
NS
Mail Connect as a feature is being targeted at inclusion in the next major release of Enterprise Vault (likely version 11) next year. We will have a lot more information about this (and other) features once we get closer to release.
Any predictions to when it will be released? At least in which Quarter? Do you have any information that you can share about Mail Connect? Thanks a lot!
It is likely to land in the second half of next year. Plans can and probably will change so we'll try and keep you posted once we get a little nearer to release.
Alex IMAP is good. Hope in newer release we would have native integration with Active Sync itself.
With IMAP in place , all users would need to reconfigure their accounts to imap , instead of their existing active sync accounts?
Cheers !!!

Hi guys,
Any news about the Mail Connect?
How about the support for non-IE browsers and mobile devices?
Thanks.
Kind regards,
NS
Mail Connect is stil in scope for the next major release of EV (likely 11.0). We'll be able to give you more information on this nearer to the time of release.
Regarding support for non-IE browsers then there are two answers:
Regarding mobile devices then today there are limited options surrounding using the EV mobile search portal bundled with the product or purchasing a solution (Arc Viewer) built by a Symantec partner Commondesk. With the release of EV 11 then both Mail Connect and the new EV search capabiltiy will greatly enhance the support for mobile devices.
