Symantec supports Patching Java and I know Oracle has an open bug regarding installation corruption but I think it should be Symantec's responsibility to create a workaround for this.  It should not be ok with Symantec as a company to just say it is Oracle's fault and leave their customers high and dry.

Either create more options where it will download the package and run at a specific action like shutdown of computer or startup.  Or best option create packages for patch that have logic in them like checking for IE running and not running if IE is running or presenting a popup to the user saying IE will be closed in 5 minutes to install the patch and so on.

The solution proposed in the below article doesn't work because if the machine does not run a software update at the point in time the machine is logged off then the patch never gets installed.  It is very very rare on a majority of our machines that they are logged off and software update is run.

Hi Jlawson

I have deployed Java updates quite a few times and the only way that works for me is installing java by group policy ....and only when using shutdown install.

This prevents that IE or other apps are running doing install which will break the install.

Try it - it will work,

Kind Regards

GP can be great but the reason we pay for Patch Management is to use it for features like this.  So this is why I have this feature request put in.  Please vote it up if you agree.

Do you get any sneakware with the Java patches? I've received a lot of complaints about unwanted sneakware and we've traced it to Java? This might be something else Symantec would want to look into if it has not done so already.

It looks like Symantec has a lot of work to do concerning Java...

I have never noticed any sneakware making it in from Java (symantec or offline silent push) unless you do a manual install and forget to uncheck to install the stuff they have included in the installer.

Ya unfortunately it has been both manual installations and from the silent push.  We stopped pushing Java updates all together because of it.
