Currentlly, Host Properties in the Admin Console does not list the release version of the operating system for UNIX and Linux hosts. In general, it lists the output of uname , the generic kernel information, which isn't very human readable and sometimes isn't clear. (How do you differenciate between SLES and RHEL, for example?)

For example:

  • Instead of "Linux 2.6.16.60-0.54.5-default" it should list "SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10.3"
  • Instead of "Linux 2.6.18-194.el5" it should list "Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server 5.5"
  • Instead of "SunOS 5.10" it should list "Solaris 10 5/09 s10s_u7wos_08 SPARC"
  • Instead of "Darwin 10.6.0" it should list "Mac OS X Server 10.6.4"

Perhaps, as an alternative, a touchfile could be placed on the client that would be read and override uname output, that could also be manually customized for display in Host Properties.
