Currently when deploying the pcA agent from the Altiris console there is no way to deploy only the host service, without deploying the pcAnywhere QuickConnect application as well.

The only current work around is to delete the pcAQuickConnect executable file and it's Start Menu shortcuts retrospectively. This is clunky.

I have received a customer request for the deployment of QuickConnect to be made optional as this is not required or appropriate for the majority of their users.

I agree with that. In a company with 5000 employees not every 5000 employees needs the pcAnywhere QuickConnect. Please remove the Quick Connect from the Plugin Package and provide a seperate package for it.

Has there been any update on this.  We do not want users to have this on their Win 7 machine!

Voted up.  C'mon Symantec.  It makes no sense to have quick connect on all machines.

anyone who voted this up should vote this 'idea' up - it has more votes than this one (same thing).  More votes - more visibility

Also, I linked to manual way to uninstall if interested here

agreed - the decision to include quick connect on EVERY endpoint is not a good one.  i can't think of a reason why anyone would want their environment set up that way, but i can think of lots of reasons NOT to.

Symantec, what is the solution? My client is not happy at all.. major security issue.

my solution is that i have a daily task to delete the shortcut from the start menu if it exists.  this task runs on every machine every day.  since most of our machines are built a day or two before the user receives it, this gives it enough time for the sub-agents (including PCA) to get installed, and then for the deletion script to kill the shortcut before the user gets the machine.

sure, it's a band-aid, but it's better than just leaving it the way symantec made it.  especially since we actually use the software portal, and it's found in the same start menu location as pca quick connect, so users would surely see it.

I aggree with you. What i did in my environment, I have used attached XML file and created software delivery task which will run on the client machines and removed the pcA icon/shortcuts from start manu and installed path.

I used this table ”Inv_Installed_File_Details” to create filter and it will fetch pcaquickconnect.exe file to confirm whether pcA agent removed from machines or not and we can add this filter in policy

AttachmentSize
Task To Delete pcAQuickConnect.xml 6.05 KB

Same problem here...it'd be awesome to have a way to turn on/off the quickconnect program except for a select group of users or computers.  I may try the task to delete the program after the pcanywhere install, but I have to make sure that no one is legitimately using this program first.  Otherwise, I'll wipe out their shortcuts.

For those who have not spotted it this has been fixed in the latest pcAnywhere Solution hotfix.

Details here : http://www.symantec.com/docs/DOC6435

Now if only they could sort out that pass-through authentication.... cheeky

What's new in this release

  • Two new policies are added that let you install pcAnywhere as Host Only without the pcAnywhere Quick Connect option:
    • pcAnywhere Plug-in for Windows - Install (Host Only)
    • pcAnywhere Plug-in for Windows - Upgrade (Host Only)
  • The "pcAnywhere Hosts by Version" report has a new field "Host Only". The "Host Only" field describes whether the managed computer has pcAnywhere Quick Connect or it is used as host only.

Thanks for posting this, Lark.  If you're clients have PCanywhere (with quick connect) and you push out the upgrade (host only) does it remove the quick connect for those users? or do you need to do a full uninstall/reinstall?
