So this kind of idea is not stands only for NetBackup and may be used for Backup Exec too. The case is to make ability completely delete data from the volume. Now deletion (expiration) is not delete actual backup, it is possible to recover it using special utilitis. To make such kind of restore impossible, you need to generate a random data and write it on the volume, than do this again and again. Such functionality very useful for companies how need to replace volumes for some reason.

Why should backup software like NBU and BE incorporate this feature?  There are a lot of utilities out there that can do this.  I don't see what this feature has to do with backup.

Because, backup software become potential security issue. And using third party software is big administrativ overhead.

Hi,

Data is very crtical and also it should be secure from alien access.Once the expiration date is attained it will delete the catalog and give us oppurtunity to recover by other means.Suppose if someone mistakenly expired we can still recover the data with other utility.

In your case, If the volume data is not very crtical, you can use the volume for other backup, else, you can perfrom physical damage to the volume and make it inaccessible.

Your physical tapes should all be encrypted anyway - delete the encryption key and nobody can recover anything from them.

Not doing encryption is a much bigger security issue that needs to be addressed first. AFTER you're doing encryption, if you want to practice DoD-levels of paranoia then as mentioned previously you can always destroy the tape (physically, deguass it, etc) too.
