Setup:

Customer runs NBU 7.6.0.2 and makes use of the Oracle Intelligent Policy.

They run an offline Oracle backup, which fails, and a few minutes later the same offline backup runs ok.

1st backup:

07/16/2014 12:30:13 - Info bpbrm (pid=18485) somlot1a.som.fsc.net is the host to backup data from

07/16/2014 12:30:13 - Info bpbrm (pid=18485) reading file list for client

07/16/2014 12:30:14 - Info bpbrm (pid=18485) starting bphdb on client

07/16/2014 12:30:16 - Info bphdb (pid=700) Backup started

**********

07/16/2014 12:30:35 - Info bphdb (pid=700) INF - End of SQLPLUS output.

07/16/2014 12:30:36 - Error bpbrm (pid=18485) from client somlot1a.som.fsc.net: ERR - failed executing

command <"C:\Program Files\VERITAS\NetBackup\bin\bpdbsbora.exe" -enhbackup -L "BRMJBD1568" -rw -i

"C:\Program Files\VERITAS\NetBackup\Logs\user_ops\dbext\logs\input.700.0.0716114.123016" -jobid 1961003>

07/16/2014 12:30:37 - Error bpbrm (pid=18485) from client somlot1a.som.fsc.net: ERR - exit status: <1>

So here the backup fails - this can be for a number of reasons ie. media/ resource related.

However, since then, the backup has brought the Oracle down and into a mounted state.

The Oracle Application is effectively offline.

2nd backup:....10 mins later

Ten minutes later the successful backup runs.

07/16/2014 12:40:39 - Info bpbrm (pid=18568) somlot1a.som.fsc.net is the host to backup data from

07/16/2014 12:40:40 - Info bpbrm (pid=18568) reading file list for client

07/16/2014 12:40:41 - Info bpbrm (pid=18568) starting bphdb on client

07/16/2014 12:40:42 - Info bphdb (pid=4308) Backup started

**********

07/16/2014 12:58:34 - Info bphdb (pid=4308) INF - End of SQLPLUS output.

07/16/2014 12:58:34 - Info bphdb (pid=4308) INF - The database is now in a SHUTDOWN state.

07/16/2014 12:58:35 - Info bpbrm (pid=18568) validating image for client somlot1a.som.fsc.net

07/16/2014 12:58:36 - Info bphdb (pid=4308) done. status: 0: the requested operation was successfully completed

the requested operation was successfully completed (0)

Here the backup was successful, backed up the database and put it back in startup mode., so the users could

work with the database then again.

Argument:

In summary, it is belief that Netbackup should put the Oracle back into startup mode after a failed

backup attempt. As in some cases the re-run may not be affect and the gap of inactive Oracle database is at risk.

There should be a flag in the policy setup noting that if a cold backup is run NBU should provide the

flexibility to the Customer to place into startup mode and this would be within Automatic Intelligent policy.

There is not obvious automated of using a script for example to restart the Oracle database.
