I have a robot library with only 1 tape drive.  When I'm out of usable media, I have to cancel the job in order to run an inventory.   This is not logical!!  I can't complete the job, even though I can physically eject the media and load more.   Backup Exec 2012 won't let me run the inventory job until the current job is cancelled.  I'm told I have to have 2 tape drives in the single library to accomplish this - which makes NO sense as to how the library functions.  I'm wasting a lot of tape in this new version due to this and other job scheduling / selection list issues and I'm NOT happy.

It's not related to BE 2012...this has been the case with previous versions. You're thinking about adding in an Idea to PAUSE the current job so that you can inventory...check to see if this hasn't already been added.

Otherwise have you tried to run a Scan job if you have barcodes on your tapes?

Thanks!

Yes, pausing the current job so I can run other jobs on the robotic library would be the solution.

I have tried everything - inventory, scan, etc. and finally called support yesterday and was told I have to have 2 tape drives in order to accomplish this.   I should not need 2 tape drives.  The library is not busy, the tape drive is not busy... BEX is just wasting time and tapes by forcing me to cancel the job and restart it.   >IF< I know that the tapes were only used for THAT job, I can erase them and reuse them, but that's not a guarantee unless I dedicate media to THAT job, which again uses extra media since I can't put more than 1 job on a tape.

It would be SMART of BEX to differentiate between backup jobs and robot library command jobs.   That's the heart of the solution...  I don't care to run another backup job while the long job is paused, just library commands.

It's not that...BE effectively locks the drive for exclusive use which is why you'd need 2 drives...1 would not be in use!
